Showell Park

Berlin, Maryland

Worcester County Recreation and Parks in Maryland recently revitalized the playground at Showell Park, transforming it into a 6,600-square-foot inclusive play space designed for children of all abilities. In partnership with All Recreation and BCI Burke, the county added two age-appropriate play structures (for ages 2–12 and 5–12), along with a variety of inclusive features such as sensory rails, serenity spots, musical and motion-based activities at ground level, a universal swing, and an interactive electronic game. The playground’s nautical-themed surfacing reflects the area’s coastal character while providing a smooth, ADA-compliant surface for easy mobility.

This project was made possible through a grant from the Maryland Board of Public Works Department of Natural Resources. Showell Park now stands as a great example of how thoughtful planning, inclusive design, and strategic funding can create play spaces that truly welcome everyone.
