Play is our passion and fitness is a way of life, but fitness can also be a way through life. With COVID-19 on everyone’s mind, we wanted to take a moment to discuss the importance of exercise in reducing stress and anxiety. We all know this to be true on an intellectual level but it can sometimes be hard to put into practice with so much uncertainty around us. Our children are also vulnerable to stress and uncertainty but may not show it in the same ways that adults do.
To keep the entire family moving, we have put together a few suggestions of ways to incorporate fitness and movement when the playground isn’t an option:
- Jumping Jacks – Don’t underestimate this quick and effective mood enhancer that gets the blood pumping and can quickly change the energy level in a room. Use as often as needed.
- Nature Walks – The single best way to practice social distancing while moving and breathing fresh air (and hopefully a little sunshine). Take time to notice your surroundings, paying attention and use your senses. Take a different path, explore, get a little lost. Variety will keep this activity new and exciting.
- _________ Competitions – Fill in the blank with any kind of fitness competition that keeps things interesting. Planks, squats, burpees, sit ups. Turn your competitive nature into a game and you will be guaranteed to laugh and have fun while building up your strength.
- Dance Routines – We know that dancing is good for both your body and your brain. So put on some great music, dream up a routine and practice, practice, practice. There is fun to be had and memories to be made here.
