Poured-in-place rubber sometimes called PIP, rubber surfacing or unitary rubber is a popular safety surfacing option for commercial playgrounds, but it also generates a lot of questions.

How long does it last? Can damaged rubber be repaired? Does it get hot? Is it accessible? Can new rubber be installed over an existing surface?

What Is Poured-in-Place Rubber Playground Surfacing?

Poured-in-place rubber, commonly called PIP rubber, is a unitary playground safety surfacing system that is mixed and installed on site.

A typical system consists of an impact-attenuating base layer with a colored wear layer installed over it. The required thickness of the system varies based on factors including the fall heights of the playground equipment and the specifications of the surfacing system.

Unlike loose-fill surfacing, PIP creates a continuous, seamless surface.

Is Poured-in-Place Rubber ADA Accessible?

Properly designed and installed unitary rubber surfacing is commonly used to provide accessible playground routes and play areas.

However, playground accessibility involves more than simply selecting an accessible surfacing material. The overall playground design—including routes, slopes, transitions and accessible play components—must also be considered.

ASTM F1951 addresses the accessibility of surface systems under and around playground equipment.

How Long Does Poured-in-Place Rubber Last?

There isn't one lifespan that applies to every installation.

The service life of PIP surfacing can be affected by:

  • Amount of playground use
  • UV exposure
  • Drainage
  • Installation quality
  • Base preparation
  • Climate
  • Snow and ice removal practices
  • Maintenance
  • Vandalism or physical damage

Regular inspection can help identify smaller areas needing attention before they become more extensive problems.

Does Playground Rubber Get Hot?

Like many outdoor surfaces, rubber surfacing can become hot when exposed to direct sunlight.

Color selection, shade and the playground's location can affect surface temperatures and should be considered during playground design.

Shade structures, site orientation and surfacing color are all factors worth considering when designing a playground that receives significant sun exposure.

Can Poured-in-Place Rubber Be Repaired?

In many cases, yes.

Localized repairs may be possible depending on the age and overall condition of the existing surface, the type and extent of damage, and the condition of the underlying base.

Areas that may warrant evaluation include:

  • Cracking
  • Separation
  • Shrinkage
  • Holes or worn areas
  • Edge deterioration
  • Damage around equipment posts
  • Changes at transitions
  • Drainage-related deterioration

The visible damage isn't always the entire problem. Before recommending a repair, it can be important to determine whether the issue is limited to the surface or whether conditions underneath the surfacing also need to be addressed.

How Do I Know Whether My Playground Rubber Should Be Repaired or Replaced?

Small, isolated areas of damage may be candidates for repair.

More extensive cracking, widespread deterioration or problems with the underlying base may make resurfacing or replacement a better option.

An on-site evaluation can help determine the condition of the existing system and whether repair, resurfacing or replacement makes the most sense.

Can New Rubber Be Installed Over Existing Playground Rubber?

Sometimes.

Resurfacing an existing system may be possible, but the existing rubber and underlying base should be evaluated first.

Drainage problems, base failures or significant deterioration may need to be corrected before additional material is installed.

Can Playground Surfacing Be Replaced Without Replacing the Playground Equipment?

In many situations, yes.

The existing equipment and site should first be evaluated, including equipment condition, fall heights, use zones, accessible routes and existing site conditions.

Replacing surfacing can also be an opportunity to update the appearance of an existing playground without replacing equipment that is still in good condition.

How Long Does Poured-in-Place Rubber Installation Take?

Installation time varies considerably from project to project.

Factors include:

  • Playground size
  • Required surfacing thickness
  • Site preparation
  • Design complexity
  • Weather
  • Site conditions

For that reason, installation schedules should be determined for the individual project rather than based on a standard number of days.

Can Poured-in-Place Rubber Have Custom Colors and Designs?

Absolutely. This is one of the areas where PIP can become part of the playground design rather than simply the surface underneath it.

Custom surfacing can incorporate colors, patterns, pathways, shapes, graphics, games, school colors, mascots and themed elements.
