One grant opportunity. Hundreds of lives changed.
Worcester County Parks and Recreation in Maryland recognized the need to replace one of its well-loved playgrounds at Showell Park. The equipment was outdated, and the county had a desire to upgrade the play space with inclusivity in mind. An inclusive play space provides accessible playground equipment and surfacing that children of all abilities can use independently. Key features include ADA-compliant surfacing, sensory-friendly components, and equipment designed for various mobility levels.
They received a grant from the Maryland Board of Public Works Department of Natural Resources, a program that oversees the funding of recreational and community revitalization projects. The funding provided resources to replace the equipment and add safety surfacing that meets National Play Safety Standards and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements. This is just one of many grant funding opportunities available to organizations with playground needs in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC.
Building a 6,600 Square Foot Inclusive Play Space
Worcester County partnered with local playground representative, All Recreation, and playground manufacturer, BCI Burke, to create a 6,600 square foot playground featuring two custom play structures designed for ages 2-12 and 5-12. The space offers versatile play experiences that promote movement, fun and developmental growth for children of all ages and abilities.
Inclusive Features That Support All Abilities
There are thoughtful details behind every event within this playground. Sensory friendly components include designated Serenity Spots and Sensory Rails integrated into the ramps, offering both calming and stimulating options for children with sensory needs. Free-standing ground-level activities include:
· a music station
· swings
· motion-based play
There is even an inclusive electronic game, called MOVMNT, powered by human interaction, that encourages friendly competition.
Cutting-edge inclusive features ensure accessibility and promote independence:
· 360 Loop Slide
· Brava Universal Swing
· Innova Bridge
Imaginative elements, such as Discovery Stations and a Playhouse, inspire creativity and pretend play.
ADA-Compliant Surfacing and Nautical Theme
Perhaps one of the more exciting features of the playground is the custom unitary safety surfacing beneath the equipment. The surfacing, which sits flush with surrounding sidewalks, makes it easier for individuals with mobility devices to access the space. At the same time, the nautical theme enhances the visual appeal and connects the space to the local coastal community.
